Today Room 28 children made chickpea patties and coleslaw with Sanitarium Nutrition Service team. We learnt how each plant food belongs to a family. Some plant food families are seasonal and grow better during certain times of the year. Broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts are all part of the brassica family and they are winter vegetables. Jemma explained to us which plant food you can get protein from and why proteins are important for your body.

We worked in groups of seven per station.  Every member had a job and it was special making these vege chickpea patties.  After we had cooked our patties we all sat together with the decorated table all ready for our burgers.  We ate and ate.  Some children found the sweet chili sauce too chili and went running out for water.

I hope you have had a relaxing enjoyable break and managed to avoid all the coughs and snuffles that seem to be around at the moment.  It was lovely to see all parents at the parent interviews last term and to share your children’s fabulous achievements. You should be very proud of them because I know I am. 

Term 3 is ten weeks long and we have a lot of exciting things planned.  Here is an overview of the topics we will be covering:

Our inquiry topic of study this term is “Adaptation”.  Our students have been taught the inquiry learning process, this includes, brainstorming, time management planning, locating information, selecting information, putting the different information together, presenting the information and finally reflecting on their learning.   Your support for their research inquiry project for this term would be appreciated, visits to the library, internet surfing and may support in their presentation as well.

Writing: The main focus is on writing explanations. The objective is to recognise and understand how texts are constructed for audiences and situations, making links to our

adaptation unit.

Reading: Recognise and understand how texts are constructed for a range of purposes, audiences, and situations. Make connections between text and adaptation unit, focusing on explanations.  Students will also be reading for enjoyment and for personal fulfilment. They will be sharing and discussing stories they enjoy reading.

Oral Language: Speech Competitions. Children will be constructing a speech independently in class and practising at home. There will be a class competition leading into an interschool competition.

P.E: We will start the term off by learning the skills of rugby league. For the second half of the term we will be learning a variety of games that we can play in the playground.

Digital Citizenship: Keeping safe and ethical behaviour online.

Health: Why do people adapt?

Arts: Adapting basic scripts to movies.

Human chain: senior students unite to move books to new location

There was only one way to move all reading resources to the new location that was to form a human chain. 

Senior school children to help move reading resources from Kotahitanga building to new location.  And they did it all by hand, forming a human chain that took book boxes after book boxes from one building and put them on the shelves in the other.

Room 28 would like to see how many children can fit inside the storage container.  How about next term we try and fit the whole school inside this big gigantic container.

Lights, Camera, Action!

Rosebank School has been invited  to  take part in a documentary on “School, Food and Garden”  being  filed  by  Robina  McCurdy  who  is  a  facilitator  with  a  special  interest  in permaculture and communities.

This  was  a  wonderful  opportunity  for  the  children  of  Room  28  to  have  such  an interesting experience.  The children of Room 28 deserve lots of credit for all their hard work and success in our garden.

Today we learnt how to make butter.  Just like they did in the olden days.

First we had to measure 300ml of liquid cream into an air tight jar.  Rahil made sure not to spill any. Sophie dropped the marble into the jar.  We tighten the lid tight.

Next we took turns shaking the jar of cream. 

We shook…

..And shook…

     

Finally we had a big solid lump of butter called curd and a water liquid called buttermilk.

Finally we had a hard lump of butter.

We are going to leave this in the fridge over night and have this with crackers the next day.  Keep checking back to this post for more update.

    

Science in a Van

We had a great science experience with this visit. 

On the 9th June the year 5-6 students had a lot of fun learning about why vinegar and baking soda makes an eruption. The year 3-4 students learnt about bubbles and mixtures. Alan and Emily taught us all about solids, liquids, and gasses.  We were introduced to the periodic table of elements, and they even tipped water on Miss Hemehema's head!  Well kind of...
