Wow the garden was thieving
during our holiday. We harvested
lettuce, radish, sliverbeet, kale, baby spinach, coriander, mint. Our new veggie for sale this term is Native
Maori Spinach. The Te Whanau lovely
teachers were the first ones offered this week to buy.
We have started to get the garden beds ready for the spring
vegetables. We are planning to sow chilli,
radish, tomatoes, cucumber, and sweet basil seeds this week.
A big thank you to all staff
for your support this week.
Today we have been very busy transplanting native
spinach in our gardens. First we had to remove all weeds and old plants
out of the planter box. We had loosened the soil and then add compost. Mrs Singh added
some sheep pellets and the class had no idea was sheep pellets was. When
we found out nobody wanted to touch the soil. We learnt how sheep pellets
are good for the garden and helps the plants grow. The team enjoyed
transplanting native spinach. Why grow native spinach?, as it doesn't bolt
and seems to tolerate dry conditions. Also it grows on and on and gives a
wonderful supply all summer.
"Put more soil, grab the potatoes" does this sound familiar that's right, two students from room 28 were privileged to plant Maori potatoes. First of all we filled a potatoe planter bag with one quarter of potting mix. We then submerged four potatoes that already sprouted into potting mix soil. We had two bags to plant. We are now going to leave the bags in our greenhouse and wait for the leaves to sprout.
Kale Coleslaw
I guarantee you and others will, like me want to serve it
this way every time. It’s so simple and
good for you.
Take thinly sliced kale, grated carrot and grated apple (sprinkle
with fresh lemon juice to stop discolouration).
Combine with finely chopped red onion and a little finely chopped
parsley and mint.
Place in a bowl and pour over following dressing:
1/3 olive oil
1/3 apple cider vinegar
1/3 miso
Mix thoroughly and leave to sand for up to an hour before eating.
Yum!
Today we were able to harvest bok choy, baby spinach, silverbeet, corriander, lettuce, mint and kale. Kale and mint is popular for the teachers as they like to put it in their smoothies. We have healthy teachers at Rosebank School. Teachers and parents we would like to you try this Room 28 kale smoothies recipe.

A big thank you to Losa and Seble for the bunch of fresh, green garlic chives you gave me to try. I took great delight in adding this herb straight from the garden to my salad. The garlic chives gave my salad a delicious 'bite' that tantalised my taste buds!! Absolutely scrumptious! Thank you so much to the Garden Club for your care and hard work in providing a resource beneficial for our community! Well done team!
