Today in class we became scientists and investigated what would happen
if we added water to cornflour. What an unbelievable experiment it was!
We all wrote up:
- What we wanted to investigate
- What we thought would happen
- The materials we would need
- What method we would use to mix the cornflour and water together.
This is what we did:
Make Your Own Quick Sand
What you'll need:
- 2
cups of cornflour
- 1 cup of water
- A
large plastic container
- A
spoon
Procedure:
1.
Slowly add
the cornstarch to the water in the bowl and stir.
2.
Notice how the slower the motion the
more fluid the substance.
3.
Quickly stir
the cornstarch and water mixture.
4. Notice how the faster motion creates
a more solid substance. It might feel like you're "breaking"
the cornstarch and water mixture.
5.
Play with
your quicksand!
The result:
We ended up with a goo that changed from a solid to a
liquid depending on how much pressure we applied to it. What an exciting lesson it was! We found out
that this is called a suspension.
Today’s experiment was amazing as we went out to do a commotion as a class. Everyone enjoyed themselves and it was nice to see smiles and complains universally in the air. We added corn flour and water together and the results were irregular, sentimental, hard and solid. It felt like hard play dough.
ReplyDeleteThe experiment was really virtuous and it made a lot of chaos. It was surely exciting to get our hands dirty and making it was amazing. We all predicted that the experiment was going to be sticky and it turned hard and solid. It was really sticky and gooey. I learnt that it turned into a liquid and felt squishy but it looked hard.
ReplyDeleteToday was an awesome experience because everyone got to acquire something and experienced it. But I thought some people made too much chaos but I want to have more experiments like this more times. For me it was a learning experience. I also learnt that you don’t have to be old or an adult to be a scientist and what happens when you mix water with corn flour. Our class is full of mini scientists.
ReplyDeleteAs we touched it, it was quite hard to grip but as soon as we put it in the container it went straight back to its gooey form. It was a very unusual substance. The more attention we paid to it as in moulding it, it became more of a solid. It was a very gooey situation it also caused a bit of chaos.

Today we did an experiment on corn flour and water. I liked the way that the goo went solid and back to liquid. I learnt that when liquid is mixed with corn flour and it touches something solid, it will go stiff.
ReplyDeleteToday we did an experience first we added 2 cups of corn flour then we added 1 cup of water. Then we went outside and we sat in our groups then one by one we felt it and it felt like really sticky gum. And some fell on the ground and it dried up. Then Mrs Singh got some quick sand on her hands and she made it into a ball and it started to melt on her hands because of the pressure it melted. And it looks like a melted plate.
ReplyDeleteYesterday Room 28 became scientist and we carried out an experiment. Our aim was to create quicksand made from corn flour and water. Once it was mixed we grabbed it using our hands. I noticed when I applied pressure it became solid in our hands but once I loosed my fingers. The solid started to become soft and gooie. As we hand on our hands it dripped through our fingers. I enjoyed experimenting today and found it very knowledgeable.
ReplyDeleteToday Room 28 was experimenting quick sand first we put 2 cups of corn flower in a ice cream container then put water our group it did not work because there was to much water. The other group worked Mrs Singh got there’s at first it looked like clay. Mrs Singh made it into a ball then. Left it on her hand it looked like melting down it felt like hard and sticky Mrs Singh put pressure to the quick sand that made it melt.
ReplyDeleteYesterday was awesome because we were doing an experiment and I learnt heaps of things. It was good and fun but it was funny because we were making a big mess when we were making it. All our class was having fun as well. It felt like play dough.

Could you give it a better name? After your activity, did you decide if it was a solid or a liquid? What are your wonderings about this substance?

ReplyDeleteI love some of the detail on your comments room 28, just like good year six work should be, it sounds like you've enjoyed making quick sand.
ReplyDeleteThis is so much fun, even for the parents! It is very messy so please do it outside or in and easily cleanable place in your home. Add a little green to to the mix to make it look extra slimy! - People have filled small pools with oobleck and they are able to walk across the surface of it (as long as they move quickly.) As soon as they stop walking, they begin to sink.
